3 Things You Need To Know About Lightroom Presets

Are you looking to take your photo editing game to the next level?

Lightroom presets are AMAZING for photo editing! I’ve purchased a few and utilize them within my business. I view them as essential, whether you create them yourself or tweak purchased ones.

Here are 3 things you need to know when selecting Lightroom presets.

  1. It’s not all copy and paste.

When I was starting out, I always thought there was a magic preset for everything. Come to find out, that is not the case at all. You can’t just copy and paste presets to make every image look spot on.

The simple fact is that lighting changes everything. No two lighting situations are exactly the same all the time, but they can be very close.

The point of presets:

  • To make your overall images look cohesive in color tones and hues.

  • To give you a base level edit to start with.

It’s important to remember that base edits are key and building upon them is important for each shot getting as close as possible to the same effect.

2. Base presets are a must.

Presets help you create a brand image. When I work with my presets, I adjust them depending on the client I am working with because they have their own brand.

Working with presets sets you up for amazing time management. This helps your photography workflow move faster.

In my opinion, presets are a must-have in your business.

Presets allow for:

  • A clean brand image

  • Efficient time management

  • Creative freedom

  • A place to start your workload

3. Presets are often over-edited.

I don’t know about you, but I see presets being sold left and right on Etsy.

The truth is, these presets tend to be over-edited. When I apply them instead of getting a stylized shot or setting a base level, they throw the image out of whack. 😅

It’s either a hit or miss with presets. I have bought presets from some of my favorite photographers and LOVE them. However, I’ve also purchased some presets that I don’t like as much, and end up regretting later.

🔑key tips When buying presets:

  • See how they apply to an image.

  • See if they change the overall look of the photos.

  • Notice if they are subtle enough to allow you to work with a variety of images.

It’s important to make sure you know what you’re getting and learn how to work with them.

A great way to tell if the preset is stylized is if they change the image dramatically. In that case, that preset will not work for most of your images, but can be a fun added touch.

I hope you enjoyed these tips about presets!
